The elder Murray sibling moved up to a career-high of 14th in the doubles list after his efforts with Australian partner John Peers in Montreal.
Although Djokovic won his match against Chard strongly, he ended up losing in the finals to Andy Murray 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. “I didn’t know what to expect obviously coming in, first hard court tournament”.
Murray is now on the verge of overtaking Roger Federer to seal the second place in the new ATP rankings to be released on Monday.
In a match that lasted just over three hours, the pair traded breaks of serve in the first and second sets and all the momentum seemed to be with Djokovic heading into the decider. I went through a lot and it was around this point last year when I dropped outside the top 10 in the world and there were a lot of questions asked of me.
“To win this one was nice, especially the way the match went”, said Murray.
With the two top seeds renewing their rivalry a drawn-out battle was expected and they did not disappoint, Murray forcing a total of 19 break points on Djokovic’s serve, but the resilient Serb found ways to hang in there time after time before eventually succumbing. In the late semi-final, Nishikori appeared to be tired in the second set as Murray won 12 of the final 13 points. “It’s not easy now playing against some the greatest players ever to play the game”.
The 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win was the 35th title of Murray’s career and gives him a huge boost for his chances at the U.S. Open in a few weeks. And in the end, when Murray might have flinched, he saved all nine break points he faced on his serve in that deciding set.
He said: “This week felt like a step forward for me”. He came up – I think he saved four, five breakpoints with first serves, wide, T, and he was hitting the angle well.
I would say the margins were so fine…
It was a happy day all round for Team Murray as he announced during the trophy ceremony that he was dedicating the win to his coach, Amelie Mauresmo, who had given birth to a baby boy on Sunday morning.
“Someone is smoking weed, I can smell it, I’m getting dizzy”, the World No. 1 reported to the chair umpire in an exchange picked up by television broadcast cameras.
