Police say the college instructor who murdered his girlfriend and a Delta State University professor killed himself as they closed in on him.
One was set up Monday.
Cleveland Police Chief Charles “Buster” Bingham previously said it did not appear the shooting victims knew each other. By then, however, Lamb had already escaped. At some point during the day, Lamb allegedly spoke with police, telling them that he “wasn’t going to jail.”
Lamb was found collapsed and he was taken to hospital in Greenville where he was pronounced dead from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Shortly after Lamb fired the shots at the university, the Delta State Twitter account sent out a tweet, alerting students and faculty that an active shooter was on campus, and stating that the university was on lockdown. His green SUV was found in the parking lot of the university during the lockdown at Delta State after Schmidt was gunned down in his office.
However, another English professor, Bill Hays, said the university did a poor job of communicating with faculty, staff and students about the emergency situation.
Officers in the two cities said they had not uncovered a motive for either killing.
It wasn’t till later Monday that police stated Lamb had additionally been recognized as a suspect within the capturing demise of a lady he lived with 300 miles away in Gautier.
“We’re working right now under the assumption that both events are related”, Gautier Police Detective Matthew Hoggatt said.
Monday, law enforcement agents set up a command center on campus as they worked to make sure everyone was safe.
Brisbane woman Amanda Robertson is on a tennis scholarship at Delta State University in Mississippi, where a teacher shot and killed his partner and a colleague before committing suicide on Monday. He was believed to be taking two online classes this term.
Ethan Schmidt and Shannon Lamb taught together at Delta State University.
Prentiss lived on the state’s coast on and off for years, according to the Sun-Herald newspaper.
Charlie King was in a history class down the hall from where the shooting occurred.
Freshman Noah Joyner, 18, said he was shaken by the lockdown.
“I thought the world of him”, LaForge said. Some people hid in a storage closet, King said.
“He was a remarkable student”, said Karen Manners Smith, a professor of history.
It later confirmed that Ethan Schmidt, a professor of American history, had been killed. Eventually, they discovered Lamb’s body. Students were told not to report to classes.
“Everybody’s phone just sort of went off at the same time”, Abraham said. Another professor, Don Allan Mitchell, says officers were sweeping buildings as helicopters circled overhead.
