The Browns aren’t fooling around.
Following a day that saw the Browns acquire former Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor and former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry in trades, that is no longer the case.
After 16 straight losses on the field, victory. The trade won’t be announced until Wednesday. On top of that, Browns QB DeShone Kizer was sent to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for CB Damarious Randall, as well as pick swaps for fourth and fifth rounds.
But with two picks in the top four, they are still guaranteed a shot at a top quarterback of this class, including Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Mason Rudolph.
The Seattle Seahawks cut ties on Friday with star cornerback Richard Sherman, who became one of the NFL’s premier cornerbacks during his seven seasons with the team. The Browns need an enforcer at strong safety, and he should be able to make much more of an impact there in 2018.
Browns GM John Dorsey has had an eventful weekend.
Both teams could be better off with Randall in Cleveland, and his value to the Browns shouldn’t be compared strictly on production, for he had plenty of opportunities in Green Bay and rarely showed consistent ability to capitalize upon those.
He is an adequate starter who comes at a relatively cheap cost. General manager Brandon Beane and coach Sean McDermott never truly viewed Taylor as their quarterback, and he was seemingly never part of their long-term vision for the team.
Taylor, 28, will give the Browns the veteran quarterback they plan to start next season as a bridge to the rookie they’re expected to draft on April 26, when they’ll have the first and fourth overall picks.
Landry is as good as they get.
Worley had three interceptions and 19 pass breakups with the Panthers. The Browns are said to be shopping wide receiver Corey Coleman – he of the oft-broken and questionable hands – and the acquisition of Landry probably makes that easier to do. The Browns used more than $30 million in cap space in making those deals.
Joe Thomas is more than excited about the flurry of moves made by the Cleveland Browns over the past two days, but he said that won’t affect his decision on whether to play in 2018 or retire. Haley spent the past six seasons working with Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell. While inheriting the stockpile of draft picks Sashi Brown acquired during his tenure in Cleveland, Dorsey vowed to make changes to the organization, and boy did he.
Randall, who struggled with injuries and had been inconsistent throughout his time in Green Bay, played some of his best football in the second half of 2017.
In a Week 4 game against Chicago on September 28, Randall was benched for the second half for apparent insubordination and was later kicked off the sideline by McCarthy, who sent him to the locker room.
