“It’s always been our biggest day of the year – like Black Friday, but for comics”, Haaland said.
Then the 17th annual Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is ideal, especially if you enjoy embracing your inner – or not-so-inner – nerd or fan.
What comics are available this year? Both stores are giving away comic books and other merchandise.
Feel free to contact the store owners to schedule an in-studio or on-location interview in advance of the event.
“It’s an global event that celebrates comic books, reading and illustration”, said Miranda Johnson, Programming and Customer Engagement Manager at APL.
His work includes such variations as Warriors’ guard Klay Thompson as the X-Men character Wolverine, traditional comic book heroes in a more hip-hop style and portraits of hip-hop performers drawn in a comic book style. “We’ve got a dump truck from Republic Services so just all kinds of fun stuff for people to look at, take pictures with and crawl around on”, Bowker added. If you’re looking for those, be prepared to head to your local comic shop early.
If you’re into the whole superhero scene, you probably already know what you want, right? Buying something from the shop helps support the owners, who usually are independent retailers.
In the case of friends Rayshon Hussain and Seth Willoughby, the shop alone has become somewhat of a second home. It is believed that about 5 million comics will be given away this year, worldwide. “Let’s not forget that comics are a great tool for reading”.
“Personally, I like “Barrier, ‘ ‘Doctor Who” and the Marvel and DC titles”, Rowles said.
“Sharing our passion for comics is incredible”.
“What’s nice is that we did see a lot of families”, he said. There’s a nice tradeoff though, as many stores will offer Free Comic Book Day deals on everything from individual issues to graphic novels and even toys and figures.
