There’s a thin line between Google’s aim of making its assistant like a human and not deceiving real humans with software like Duplex.
On Thursday, Google said expressly it’s going to design disclosures to the characteristic.
The in-development AI uses advanced natural language tools to sound more human – including dropping “umms” and “ahhs” into speech – but its first demonstration split opinion, with some alarmed that AI would pretend to be a human.
The digital assistant was also programmed to understand when to respond quickly, such as after someone says “hello”, versus pausing as a person might before answering complex questions.
“In the video, AI Duplex said it is calling on behalf of a client”.
“In the domain of making appointments, it passes the Turing test”, Hennessy said at an I/O meeting. All of LG’s 2018 OLED and Super UHD LCD TVs running WebOS are getting Google Assistant and Voice controls. Just think of the implications of that technology. “We really want it to work in cases, say, if you’re a busy parent in the morning and your kid is sick and you want to call for a doctor’s appointment”.
A slew of features are coming to Android, and we’ve already talked about them in detail, in an in-depth article. And surprisingly, the staff didn’t even recognized that it is not a real human. Google is also working on integrating Assistant into Google Maps so drivers can get navigation information more easily.
It seems as though, on this issue, Google has catapulted the mainstream discourse into a place many were not ready to go.
And for many this poses an ethical concern.
“The key point here is that it should identify itself”, Abbass said in the article.
So far the Assistant has been centered on the verbal conversation you can have with Google, but now Google is bringing the simplicity of voice together with a rich visual experience.
“We are designing this feature with disclosure built-in, and we will make sure the system is appropriately identified”.
While the technology itself is fascinating, perhaps the more interesting revelation from the past few days has been the vociferous public conversation. Recently, we have witnessed movies like “her”, a romantic Sci-Fi in which Theodore Twombly (the main character) fell in love and develops a relationship with an intelligent computer operating system Samantha – that personified through a female voice.
Though not on the same scale as the invention of the smartphone, Duplex is still arguably the most forward-looking, and possibly the most life-altering technological achievement in recent times. Later this summer, you’ll be able to schedule Routines for a specific day or time either using the Assistant app or through the Google Clock app for Android.
