These new, long-awaited Intel chips follow the recent launch of Microsoft Corp.’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows 10 operating system.
Even though there is no doubt these processors will be more powerful than their predecessors, questions are being raised whether using an email client or an internet browser really needs a new processor. With that said, the former is now outperforming the latter in overall performance. That means longer battery life, and thinner laptops. Other Dell computers will get the chip upgrade later this month. Learn how to apply agile marketing to your team at VB’s Agile Marketing Roadshow in SF.
“This is Intel’s best microprocessor ever”, Skaugen said during the company’s press conference at the IFA electronics show in Berlin.
Unfortunately we don’t know anything about pricing or availability just yet, nor do we know how much RAM or storage the various Compute Sticks will include.
Phablets start at 5.5 and bigger and there is potential for Intel to put its dual core processor inside. Laptops using the chips are half as thick and half the weight of the older ones.
On mobile, Skylake is a highly scalable architecture, said Schlomit Weiss, VP of Intel’s Platform Engineering Group. We should hear more about this shortly.
The best of these enhancements are probably those found in Intel’s Core M chips, which are commonly used to power ultra-light notebooks like the new Apple MacBook and Intel’s Compute Stick.
Skylake processors boast with a number of graphical and processing improvements that help it take more advantage of newer technologies such as PCY Express 3.0 and DDR4 memory.
“They can enable unbelievable new PC experiences like logging into your computer with your face and having a personal assistant respond to your voice”.
That’s a total of 26 mobile Skylake processor SKUs, but what about the desktop? EVGA did mention that the gaming notebook would be thin, which might point towards less macho cooling, but Skylake has very good power/performance envelope and the increased power from overclocking is minimal compared to previous generation CPUs with the same high percentage overclocks. A small Gigabyte built set-top PC using Iris graphics is, Intel claims, as powerful as 80% of discrete graphic cards on the market right now.
In short, Moorhead said, tablets and smartphones haven’t killed the PC. But if you can hold out another year, Intel’s next-gen systems with Optane based SSD’s and beyond could be something that you might want to hold out for.
There are over a billion PCs that are over three years old, and that’s the market that Skaugen and his team are targeting with Skylake.
