They opened up the 2017 season with a 31-10 victory against Appalachian State at Sanford Stadium, a team known for its early-season havoc on MI a decade ago.
The college football season is officially underway and, while last weekend marked the opening of the season, this weekend promises to be the first with a full slate of intriguing matchups, including the Georgia Bulldogs hosting one of the most successful historical underdogs, the Appalachian State Mountaineers.
It’s hard to believe that it’s already been ten years since what is arguably the biggest upset in the history of college football.
“He’s playing a lot better right now than I remember him a year ago”, Smart said. “I was probably in the backyard playing it”. Appalachian State’s defense should once again be tenacious this year, and although people will readily and correctly say that Georgia has a lot of high-end offensive talent at the skill positions, first games are often situations in which teams – even the more talented ones – need time to get into a rhythm. The Mountaineers led the game at halftime, 13-3.
“They just got here in July, so to come in here in this environment, I thought they played well”, said Appalachian State coach Scott Satterfield.
Even so, there have been frequent reminders this week of the MI upset.
When he entered in the huddle for the first time, Fromm’s teammates said that he was not nervous in the least. It’s on in the weight room.
While there was no true quarterback competition this offseason, everyone from Smart to Eason admitted Fromm’s presence has pushed the sophomore to get better.
Then everything changed involving a pair of 19-year-old quarterbacks.
Ramsey threw two interceptions on his only two pass attempts against Appalachian State.
While Eason was being treated for a left knee injury, Jake Fromm completed 8 of his first 11 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown in leading Georgia to three straight first-half touchdown drives.
Georgia has a very strong pair of running backs in Nick Chubb and Sony Mitchell and their SEC receivers. “So I knew once he got his opportunity, he was going to take it”. The question still lingers as for how an FCS team that was reported by the Associated Press to be nothing more than “sacrificial lambs” delivered such a humbling loss to the Wolverines, who clobbered fellow national power Notre Dame 38-0 two weeks later. He finished the game 10 of 15 for 143 yards and one touchdown in a dominating 31-10 win over the Mountaineers. Two plays later, Lamb rushed up the middle for a 20-yard touchdown with 5:41 remaining. The Jake Fromm era began just eight-and-a-half minutes into the first quarter of his first collegiate game.
It’s all good for one game, but once teams start to notice that you don’t go deep with a quarterback, that’s when it might become an issue.
He did exactly what you want from your backup quarterback – he came in, handed the ball off, made some short and intermediate throws and didn’t turn the ball over. “. Coach Chaney has done a good job with the offense”.
