Sanchez Elementary School in Santa Maria held its annual Veterans Day celebration on Thursday and hosted local veterans as special guests.
During the ceremony, a video message will be played from country music icon Charlie Daniels, whose Journey Home Project donated $10,000 to outfit the Veterans Resource Center with technology to be used by student veterans.
“I also think there is a very big need for this amongst our student body that our students learn about Veterans Day, to have an opportunity to thank the veterans, to meet some veterans and to see them honored”.
Rep. Clark Johnson called Veterans Day a time to reflect and a challenge for the future.
The school’s J-ROTC unit presented the colors and students talked about the importance of Veterans Day and what it means to them. After I completed my active duty, I served in the U.S. Army Reserve for four years, which I completed while in law school at Georgetown University. “It’s a great event”.
The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter and the American Legion and Auxiliary members of Jesse Martin #9 encourage all military veterans from the town to come and be recognized for their service to our country. The keynote speaker for the Veterans Day ceremony will Maj. A Harmar alumnus, he has a daughter, Mylee, in fourth grade there. “I feel good about it”.
“Red symbolizes hardiness and valor; white signifies purity and innocence; and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice”, she said.
We are fortunate to live in a nation rich with blessings and freedoms that so often are taken for granted.
“It’s a real nice thing to have an assembly like this”, Dunn said.
“Honestly, it’s an honor to be here”, student Erika Book said.
The students wrote thank you letters to the veterans and read them to their audience. The three were escorted into the school’s gym by a beaming Isabella Harding, a fourth grader at the school and Josh’s daughter.
“I’m down here practically every day”, she said.
“It’s important to hear a civilian voice to help us better express our gratitude”, he said. “It’s an outstanding job by the kids”.
Hair Cuttery is hosting its Veterans Day Share-A-Haircut program on Saturday, November 11. Her father and two uncles are veterans, she said. The longest serving Mayor of the City of Danbury, the Honorable Mark D. Boughton, a former U.S. Army Reserve Sergeant, offered his honest thanks for the service of Immaculate’s veterans, and asked students to make important connections.
