“The short answer is this: We did a fundraiser for Sen”.
Capitol Police arrested 56 protesters Thursday who flooded Senate office buildings to voice opposition to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and express support for his accuser, Christine Blasey Ford.
As CBS late-night star Stephen Colbert noted last night, that demand furthered the U.S. Senate’s reputation for not caring what abused women have to say about Supreme Court nominees.
Still Flake, who said previously that “We can’t vote until we hear more”, and was one of the first Republicans to call for the hearing’s delay, is also among those imploring Ford to testify Monday. But she doesn’t belong to the Judiciary Committee.
How might that have to work?
Hirono said Wednesday on CNN’s “New Day” that committee is setting up a situation “where there is not even a modicum of fairness extended” to Ford without a proper FBI investigation into the incident. “I think everything’s going to be just fine”.
Democrats have said the White House can order a more detailed FBI investigation, as occurred during the 1991 confirmation process for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas after he was accused of sexual harassment.
By refusing to call Mark Judge as a witness, and refusing to direct the FBI to investigate, Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the president are in lockstep. Trump and other Republicans, cautious of alienating women, have treated Ford carefully while calling for a quick vote. Kavanaugh is scheduled to appear again before the Senate Judiciary Committee next Monday following allegations that have endangered his appointment to the Supreme Court.
Davis and spokespersons for the Judiciary Committee did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., in which she raised her allegations against Kavanaugh.
Kavanaugh was spotted at the White House on Thursday, and allies said he is eager to address the accusation.
“I made an appalling and inexcusable mistake of judgment in posting the tweet thread in a way that identified Kavanaugh’s Georgetown Prep classmate”, the lawyer, Ed Whelan, tweeted Friday.
After Hirono posed the questions to Kavanaugh, it emerged that Ford sent a letter to Congress prior to the hearings accusing him of physical and sexual assault, when they were both teenagers in the 1980s.
It’s abundantly evident Trump is sending a signal to his base that this is all a ruse, and occasionally throwing in a “Hey, we should let her testify” doesn’t really change that.
Ford told the Republican-led Judiciary panel that she would be willing to testify later next week.
Ford wished to remain anonymous, but chose to speak to the Post amid fears she was on the verge of being outed. She wants the FBI to investigate to establish a baseline of facts about what she and others say before she’ll agree to talk to the Judiciary Committee, especially in a public hearing.
It’s against the law to lie to Congress, but lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation is considered really serious.
She says she was only saved from being raped after a friend intervened and pulled him off her.
Exactly. All this is also taking place amid a thick bramble of political maneuvering.
Twelve of Prof Ford’s family members have written an open letter, posted on Twitter, in which they call her “highly ethical”, adding that “her honesty is above reproach”.
