According to ESPN.com, with the training camp starting next week, Thompson is looking to gain maximum contract of $94 million over the span of five years, while the Cavaliers have offered $ 80 million for the same span. With both sides not hinting at a change in their proposals, the talks have virtually remained at a standstill since early July.
In August, Bleacher Report reported Thompson’s agent Rich Paul believes Thompson could receive a max offer as an unrestricted free agent in 2016. The NBA’s salary cap is expected to jump almost $20 million next summer as a result of a new TV deal, and Thompson could enter as one of the best free agents when teams are flush with cash.
However, Thompson and the Cavs have hit a wall in contract negotiations, one that’s only been complicated by Thompson being a restricted free agent, meaning the Cavs can match any offer Thompson receives. But when Thompson stepped up for an injured Kevin Love in the playoffs, he averaged a double-double of 11.6 points and 12.6 rebounds. Should he bite the Cleveland deal, he would be earning just $16 million a year compared to his target salary which is roughly around $18.8 million.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have technically started training camp if you consider the advanced efforts of Lebron James of calling his teammates over in Miami as such.
Weems is indeed a close friend and high-school teammate of LeBron James, but comes to the Cavs having served the last two seasons as an assistant at NCAA Div. I Oakland University in Michigan and before that at Drexel.
James has passed on multiple opportunities to apply public pressure to the Cavaliers and hasn’t commented on it via social media.
However, Thompson and his camp believe that they could get more than $16 million next summer.
The Cav’s aren’t budging from what they are offering which stands at $16 million per year to Thompson.
The National Basketball Association season is right around the corner, and unless a deal happens soon, the situation between the Cavs and Thompson doesn’t bode well for a team that looks like a contender to make it back to the Finals.
