Pastrnak’s pass connected but the speedster paid the price and nearly was deposited onto the Toronto bench by defenseman Roman Polak.
The series is now 2-1 Boston with Game 4 Thursday night in Toronto. But they need to be mindful of a Leafs winger drifting alone in the neutral zone when that happens.
San Jose has won two games in Anaheim and come home with a huge advantage.
When Zdeno Chara tied the game in the second period on a awful angle, it felt like it was going to be one of those night for Frederik Andersen and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Andersen made 40 saves saves in all, including a highlight reel-quality stop when the Bruins had an extra attacker with the net empty.
One player who had a lot of opportunities was David Pastrnak.

Late in the second period of a 2-2 game, the Matthews trio had a rare, good shift of quality chances and extended zone time against the Bergeron line.
You can’t win them all.
This means the Leafs shouldn’t have been given a power play to begin with.
I give credit to the Maple Leafs. Andersen said he expected Chara to go for a rebound out front, not expecting that he had so much room behind him to shoot on.
In total, Pastrnak and his line mates have wracked up 20 points, the Leafs top line only has 2 points.
The Maple Leafs were manhandled through two games. The stretch pass, a strategy that did little to faze the Bruins in Boston, became a lethal weapon again.
Marleau’s first goal of the game came at 3:49 of the second period from Mitch Marner of Markham, Ontario and Morgan Rielly of Vancouver, British Columbia.
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Joonas Donskoi scored one goal and set up another to start a four-goal barrage in the second period and San Jose raced past Anaheim for the third straight game to take a 3-0 series lead.
Matthews scored the go-ahead goal in the second period to lead the Maple Leafs picked in a 4-2 victory Monday night, cutting the Bruins’ lead in their Eastern Conference first-round series to 2-1.
Later in the second, Zdeno Chara tied the game at two with a lovely top shelf goal you’d expect to see from one of the Bruins’ top line players. They may not pay off in 2018, or even in 2019, but there will be a day when Marner and his teammates look back on these springs fondly. All three games so far have been decided by a goal, L.A. defenseman Drew Doughty was suspended for an illegal check to the head of William Carrier and Kings coach John Stevens is none too happy about a missed call on Vegas forward Erik Haula for hitting Anze Kopitar in the face with the butt end of his stick Sunday night. No looking at the officials (Pastrnak) and no looking to the heavens (everyone) after a great save; that’ll only boost Andersen’s coverage. “We had some confidence coming back on home ice with how we played to finish the regular season”.
From that point, Andersen collected his composure to shut the door the rest of the way.
It sounds like a simple formula for the Bruins to put a stranglehold on the series. “We got the win, now we have to look forward to next game”.
One thing is for certain though, whichever team dominates special teams in the final games of this series will probably enter round two. “But we had pockets of the game where we they beat us in that area”.
