(More ominously, he is now wasting resources in Iowa, where he has virtually no hope of victory.) That leaves a huge swath of mainstream and moderate GOP voters – wary of Bush and horrified at the prospect of Trump, Carson or Cruz as the nominee – for Rubio to gobble up.
The first-term US senator from Florida appeared before hundreds of people, crowded into a room at Modern Woodmen Park, criticizing federal government for overregulation, its role in education and the Affordable Care Act that he says raises costs and costs jobs.
“He’s a pretty impressive young man”, said Chuck Freedman, who now lives in The Villages after spending years in suburban Washington, speaking of Rubio. Unlike Jeb Bush, he has had sterling debate performances.
Since he entered the race in April, Rubio has spent much of his time fundraising. “I’m Christian. I love people“.
“Well, what I think is we need to have someone who is a serious person”, Rubio said.
The friendly audience at The Villages is part of Rubio’s drive to keep climbing in the polls and show that he can pack his events.
