According to Reuters, the efforts by Facebook to adopt postcard verification is a measure to sideline criticism from security experts, election integrity watchdog groups and lawmakers that Facebook and other social media platforms had responded poorly to their use by Russian mercenaries in spreading conflict-ridden political content and misleading information during the US presidential election in 2016.
It’s been a common complaint from Trump, who has alternately downplayed the extent of Russian interference and blamed his predecessor for failing to stop it.
The latest indictment by the Justice Department special counsel, Robert Mueller, refutes President Donald Trumps claims that Russian interference in the 2016 election was a Democratic hoax.
DWYER: Trump, for his part, has asserted that his campaign did not collude with Russian efforts to sway the election.
Trump addressed the collusion narrative and Rosenstein’s announcement on Twitter on Friday, writing, “Russia started their anti-US campaign in 2014, long before I announced that I would run for president”.

Russia’s foreign minister says the US indictment of a group of Russians accused of an elaborate plot to disrupt the 2016 presidential election is “just blabber”.
It alleges that a campaign directed by Yevgeny Prigozhin, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, became focused on hurting Clinton and helping Trump swing the vote. I conveyed my view poorly. “I asked Twitter, I asked Facebook, how does a functioning democracy benefit from false information?” the congressman said. “But you won’t recognize the truth, impose sanctions or act at all. And to all of you who have worked so hard over the last six months to demonstrate that we understand our responsibility to prevent abuse on Facebook – and are working hard to do better in the future – my deepest apologies”. Citing emails and conversations by the perpetrators of the plot, it also demonstrated that the ongoing probe may have access to explosive intelligence material gathered on the Russian operations.
Those tweets follow the Justice Department’s Friday announcement regarding indictments against Russian nationals and entities for meddling in United States elections. Trump went on to tweet about the Russian Federation allegations over the weekend.
