Serena Williams won her 21st grand slam title by beating Garbine Muguruza in straight sets on Centre Court.
Despite holding all four majors at the same time twice, she has yet to win all four in the same year (known as completing the Grand Slam).
In the end though she won in straight sets, without playing anywhere near her best tennis, completing her second “Serena Slam” and putting her just one US Open away from the calendar Grand Slam – a feat that hasn’t been achieved since Steffi Graf did it in 1988. “Like I always say, ‘There’s 127 other people that don’t want to see me win.’ Nothing personal, they just want to win”, Williams said, referring to the size of the field at a major tournament.
The 33-year old became the oldest women’s major victor in the open era with a confident 6-4, 6-4 victory, during which she was never truly stretched, by opponent Garbine Muguruza.
But Williams eventually cranked into gear and started to find her range, forcing Muguruza to save two break points in the sixth game before the American got her reward on the Spaniard’s serve to level at 4-4.
Williams had her fellow American tennis superstars reaching for superlatives after racking up a 21st grand slam title, with Roddick, John McEnroe and Lindsay Davenport leading the acclaim for the 33-year-old Wimbledon champion.
Williams increased the pressure and, when Muguruza served a double fault to bring up set point, the top seed smashed a forehand victor before pumping her fist in celebration.
Neither player seemed to realize the match was over, and there was an awkward delay before Williams covered her face with both hands, then smiled and raised her arms in the air.
“It’s hard to concentrate on a final because you have Serena in front of you“, said Muguruza.
“I learned that she’s also nervous, even though she played I don’t know how many finals,” Muguruza said. I feel physically better than I did when I last won the “Serena Slam” in 2003.
“Everyday is a pleasure to be playing and winning Wimbledon“.
She is the first player since Graf in 1988 to win Wimbledon and the Australian and French Opens in the same year.
“I had a great time the last time I was there, and I didn’t play past year”, she said.
In fact, the secret to her current stranglehold on the women’s game, might just be that she has been there, done it and bought the T-shirt.
Williams was pushed to her limits time and again at Wimbledon as she survived a treacherous draw that included showdowns with ex- world number ones Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka and sister Venus.
Patrick Mouratoglou is Serena Williams’ coach as well as lover according to most accounts.
Turn back the calendar more than a year, to June 28, 2014, when Serena Williams lost to Alize Cornet in the third round at Wimbledon.
When Muguruza hit a stunning backhand cross-court pass victor to go 0-30 up at 5-3, even Williams joined in the prolonged applause. She actually has a win against me.
“Just wonderful. It feels really, really good”.
“I feel like I’ve kind of knocked all that out and we’ll just go from there”.
