Just about two minutes after launch, a launch vehicle failure caused the Falcon 9 rocket to break up on ascent.
SpaceX Mission Update – The latest SpaceX Mission attempt, which aimed to bring supplies and scientific cargo to the global Space Station, has failed for unknown reason.
SpaceX CEO and founder is none other than Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA)’s Elon Musk.
The company said: “Our teams are reviewing data to determine root cause and we will be able to provide more information following a thorough fault tree analysis“.
“The vehicle has broken up”, said NASA commentator George Diller, after NASA television broadcast images of the white rocket falling to pieces.
Bill Gerstenmaier of NASA human exploration and operations said it’s too soon to say if Sunday’s accidents will affect that timeline.
Officials with the 45th Space Wing said the debris, which could be toxic or explosive, would most likely appear along the beaches north of Cape Canaveral (in Brevard County).
“We would be remiss to underestimate the gravity of the situation right now”, Nelson said today, noting, however, that SpaceX has made seven previous successful flights to the ISS for NASA.
And finally, an investigation is underway into the catastrophic failure of a SpaceX rocket that exploded in mid-air over Florida on Sunday.
The commercial cargo program was designed to accommodate loss of cargo vehicles.
The rocket had 4,000 pounds of supplies, 30 student projects, two Hololenses, as well as a docking adapter for the ISS that would allow for future commercial crewed capsules to dock with the station onboard. Those missions included six station cargo runs for NASA under a 15 flight contract. The rocket was carrying supplies to the global Space Station. We lost a space suit.
Another supply ship, Russian Progress, is set to launch on July 3 with a Japanese HTV flight to the ISS scheduled for August.
NASA insists the space station crew has enough food and water to last until the fall. In October this year, SpaceX‘s United States rival Orbital Sciences lost its Antares rocket with a Cygnus cargo carrier aboard in a fireball launch-pad explosion.
