The lawyer for the two black men arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks store and later released without charges says he hopes “something productive for the community” can come out of their meeting with the company. He was in Philadelphia on Monday when he conducted the interview on Good Morning America.
“None of the white customers were asked to leave, and they were there a lot longer than those young men who were just there for a few minutes”, Cohen said.
“Unconscious bias training is critical and top of our list”.
Mayor Kenney said he was pleased they traveled to the city to discuss what happened and “were very contrite”. “What happened was wrong and we will fix it”. The police arrested the men for trespassing after asking them three times to leave.
“In certain circumstances, local practices are implemented”, Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said. The man explained the store’s employees gave him the code for the bathroom-before he purchased a drink.
The video of the Philadelphia incident sparked public outcry online, with the company facing accusations of racial discrimination.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross defended the actions of officers in the video saying his officers “did absolutely nothing wrong”.
It’s worth noting a couple of caveats: Not every company-owned Starbucks store will close, so this estimate may be slightly high.
Protesters crowded the store Sunday calling the arrest racist. In this particular instance, the guidelines that were provided on when to call the police had ambiguity in them. They were released eight hours after their arrest.
Starbucks has a history of advocating for racial equality.
The coffee shop soundtrack is usually a reliable mix of inoffensive indie rock, porcelain clinking on countertops, and the caffeinated chitter chat of customers.
