“I think there was great hope that it would resonate”, Carpou said, “and it did that, but it also turned around the box office“.
The film was boosted by strong reviews from critics – it now holds a 88% score on review site Rotten Tomatoes – and audiences who gave it a CinemaScore of A. Some 52 percent were male.
The biographical movie about the N.W.A hip-hop group was the ninth movie out of 10 to capture a profit, based on the movies that Universal released this year to date. On its first day, Compton clearly blew beyond the studio’s expectations. “If you were to create a blueprint for how to perfectly execute a box office year, they’ve done it, ” said Dergarabedian.
On the heels of “Jurassic World“, “Furious 7“, “Minions“, “Pitch flawless 2” and “Fifty Shades of Grey“, Universal’s stellar year continued with its sixth number-one opener.
“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” takes the No. 2 spot, bringing in an estimated $17 million in its third week out.
Straight Outta Compton is out in the UK on August 28 2015. It has already earned that back and has made much more for Universal.
