The Mindy Project is the most recent single-camera, half-hour comedy to move from network to streaming following Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s move from NBC to Netflix shortly before it’s premiere. Kaling says the show will return to three acts, whereas FOX had a hard guideline about needing four acts per episode. They came in to save us and I acknolwedge that.
While the “Inception” actor will play the role of Mindy’s husband, Pinto will be wooing her boyfriend Danny while playing her doppleganger.
The procedure will apply to “The Mindy Project“, which joins Hulu fold for its fourth season after being canned by Fox, as well as “Casual“, “The Hotwives of Las Vegas”, “The Awesomes” and “RocketJump: The Show”.
“She’s sort of at square one when the baby is born”, said executive producer Matt Warburton.
Although the show’s creator has assured the fans that despite the transition from TV network to online streaming site, the show will not be altered drastically.
“With all of our new originals, we will release episodes weekly”, Erwich said.
Warburton promises that having more flexibility with the episode running times on Hulu means more characters than just Mindy will get time in the spotlight in Season 4. Asked what will change in the upcoming fourth season: “Full penetrative sex to open and close the episodes”, he joked. “Our demo is, like, Stephen Colbert’s daughter, young women that will run the country one day”.
“I think if we really changed the show and made it more risqué and put it more on a tilt towards stuff you might find on HBO or Showtime, we would maybe turn off some of our core viewers”, said Ike Barinholtz, who is a cast member, producer and writer on the series. “The show can breathe a little bit more, especially with the great ensemble that we have”.
Kaling and Co. talked up plans for the new season, which will include guest shots from Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Garret Dillahunt. He’ll play someone (a doctor, presumably) who takes over for the Mindy character while she is on maternity leave. “I just want to make the show better than it’s ever been … and I think we did”.
But Hulu didn’t just provide more freedom, it also rescued The Mindy Project from extinction. “I’m such an ambitious person and I’m so grateful to Hulu for giving us this opportinity”.
