Tightening the noose, President Donald Trump has advocated “Buy American, Hire American” policy.
States from Hawaii to Washington, immigration advocacy groups and private residents have filed lawsuits to block the new ban from going into effect, as happened when Trump issued his first travel ban in late January. Like the current one, it barred citizens of Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen from entering the United States for 90 days, but it also included Iraq, which was subsequently taken off the list.
Is it possible that Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Neil Gorsuch, could be seated before the case goes to the Supreme Court?
“The travel ban is scheduled to go into effect this Thursday”.
Kevin Brown of the Service Employees International Union, Kelly McDonald and Jessica Sporn, both of Montclair, N.J., chant in protest of the travel ban before the start of a press conference, Thursday at Newark Airport, in Newark, N.J.
Federal judges will weigh the president’s powers to secure the nation from terrorists against the constitutional rights of foreigners in the United States.
It said the federal government can’t enforce the new travel ban unless it asks Judge Robart to modify his original restraining order. Jimmy Carter used it to deny some Iranians entry to the US during the hostage crisis, Ronald Reagan to bar Cubans who didn’t already have relatives here and President Barack Obama to keep out North Korean officials.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump addresses the Values Voter Summit at the Omni Shoreham September 9, 2016 in Washington, DC. Unlike the first travel ban, travel ban 2.0 allows those who already had temporary visas and permanent residency permits to enter the country.
“We’re going to win”.
President Trump said it would stop terrorists from entering the United States but critics say it is discriminatory.
It’s worth pointing out that Dershowitz added something of a disclaimer to that claim, saying he thought SCOTUS would rule in favor of the ban if Trump and his crew would shut the hell up about it. “The President’s Executive Order falls squarely within his lawful authority in seeking to protect our Nation’s security, and the Department will continue to defend this Executive Order in the courts”. “Any reasonable, objective observer would conclude … that the stated secular goal of the Executive Order is, at the very least, “secondary to a religious objective” of temporarily suspending the entry of Muslims”. A further hearing must take place – for which the judge has expedited – to see whether or not the TRO should be extended. He said the state “preliminarily demonstrated” that its universities will suffer monetary damages and intangible harms and the state’s economy is likely to suffer a loss of revenue due to a decline in tourism because of the order.
The hearing was one of three held Wednesday in federal courts around the country. U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang issued a preliminary injunction applicable nationwide. Similarly, INA Section 207 gives the president full power to set the number of refugees the US allows in each year.
The modified ban was created to pass constitutional muster by being narrower and, allegedly, more carefully tailored than the original.
Has no one seen fit to mention to Trump that his past statements about the ban and the courts are an ongoing problem?
