Meanwhile, Meyer said he “should’ve done more” in a statement following the announcement of his ban, adding that he gave Smith “the benefit of the doubt”. The biggest regret is I wish I knew more.
The three-game suspension can and will be debated, but what was painfully clear on Wednesday night was that Meyer still doesn’t understand the weight of what has been alleged against him.
Gene Smith, Ohio State’s athletic director, replied, “I would be careful”. Zach Smith, who has denied his ex-wife’s claims, was sacked in July after news reports highlighted her allegations.
Investigators said Zach Smith had a history of “misconduct and other problematic, or at least questionable, behavior”, and Meyer was aware of some of it.
The report also expressed “concern” over findings that associate athletic director Brian Voltolini approached Meyer at the start of the investigation about whether the media could access the head coach’s phone records, according to the Sporting News. “I don’t know who creates a story like that”, Meyer said. When asked what his message to her would be, he said, “I have a message for everyone in this, I’m sorry we are in this situation”.
The Ohio State football program and head coach Urban Meyer could be headed for a messy situation.
The panel completed a two-week investigation Sunday before delivering the final report to Ohio State’s board of trustees Monday.
Of course, that part is relevant because Smith took penis pics while at the White House on the official Ohio State trip to D.C.to meet President Barack Obama in April 2015.
Zach Smith told ESPN in a statement that he was sacked due to “media uproar” and that he didn’t think he “deserved it”.
The decision came after an 11-hour meeting by the university’s board of trustees to discuss the fate of Meyer after an investigation into the head coach’s actions in the wake of the Zach Smith scandal.
Zach Smith was arrested in 2009 in Florida for aggravated battery on a pregnant female – Courtney Smith – but no formal charges were filed.
Meyer said his loyalty to Bruce “likely impacted” how he treated Zach Smith over the years.
However, the report has some other interesting things to say about Meyer and the truth.
The report presented to the board, which consisted of 40 witness interviews and the review of “over 60,000 e-mails and 10,000 text messages”, also concluded that “Coach Meyer has ‘a honest commitment to the Respect for Women core values that he espouses and tries to instill in his players'”. The Buckeyes open the football season at home on September 1 against Oregon State.
Investigators were unable to determine whether Meyer ultimately did so, though the report noted, “Often, although not always, such reactions evidence consciousness of guilt”. The deal through 2022 increased Meyer’s salary to $7.6 million in 2018, with annual 6 percent raises. Meyer denied knowledge of the 2015 allegations against Zach Smith, however.
The question then became: “How much did Urban Meyer know, and when did he know it?” He changed his mind soon after and coached another season. The Gators went 8-5 in 2010, and afterward, Meyer stepped down for good. But what has transpired over the last three weeks at Ohio State is a lesson to all coaches.
The Meyer investigation cost $500,000 and was conducted by the national law firm Debevoise & Plimpton.
For worse or worse, football is an oversized monster on most college campuses, and that’s even moreso at Ohio State.
An Ohio State spokesperson did not reply immediately to a request for comment.
Ohio State announced on August 1 it was investigating the allegations, hours after college football reporter Brett McMurphy published an account of the claims on his Facebook page.
