The Illinois Department of Public Health reported that 44 people contracted the virus a year ago in the state and four died, although there were no human cases reported in Will County, the release said. Nationally, six states have reported human West Nile virus infections this year.
Last year, Wyoming recorded five cases.
Most people infected with West Nile virus do not experience any symptoms. They also recommend emptying standing water from birdbaths, pool covers, flower pots and other containers. Less than 1 percent of people infected with West Nile virus will become severely ill. Or, if it comes back with 30 or more of the Culex type of mosquito. Clothing should be light-colored and made of tightly woven materials. Be sure that door and window screens are in good condition so mosquitoes can not get indoors. Individuals, especially those 50 years of age or older, or those with compromised immune systems, who are most at risk, are urged to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Clear debris from ditches; cut small channels to help pooling water drain; and fill holes and tire ruts with dirt.
