This is Depp’s best performance in years.
For an actor who has always delighted in head-to-toe transformation, playing the part of the rebounding superstar is not one that appeals. His piercing gaze would meet the camera, and that was when I felt the most horror. The Martin Scorsese/Jack Nicholson version of the same general story in The Departed was an evening at the carnival compared to the sepulcher Depp and Cooper build for Whitey.
“There’s a kind heart in there”, he said. While folks certainly wouldn’t want to mess with any of the gangsters Joe Pesci has played over the years, Bulger is of a different ilk.
Today East 3rd Street is a quiet residential street in the middle of an increasingly gentrified area of the city and father of nine, Billy, 81, lives a low-key life with his wife, Mary, 80. “Good on him”.
Phil Castinetti, who runs New England memorabilia shop Sportsworld, said he put the jumpsuit up for sale after buying it past year from a man who claimed to be Bulger’s former cellmate.
“You can’t approach him as a gangster”.
As for Whitey, his own loyalty to his younger brother endures, writing recently to three high school students who wrote to him in jail he stated: ‘My life was wasted and spent foolishly, brought shame and suffering on my parents and siblings and will end soon’.
The following year, Greig pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to harbor a fugitive and two counts of identity theft.
Johnson shares several intense scenes with Johnny Depp, particularly a pivotal hospital sequence. The 1977 Boston Globe article-seen in the movie with Bulger on the cover-was actually about both Bulger’s and Flemmi’s roles as informants.
This brings me to another issue: “Black Mass” does little to hold the FBI accountable for its actions, which included not only turning a blind eye to Bulger’s crimes, but even participating in some of them – the latter of which never factors in onscreen. After the actual Whitey Bulger declined Depp’s visitations to converse about and prepare for the role, Cooper hired some of Bulger’s old “associates” as on-set consultants.
“People don’t come to narrative movies for the facts”, he says. What’s a family for if you don’t spend time with them?
“At some point, if this continues, we may have to open up some type of investigation”, Sheriff Joseph D. McDonald Jr. told the Track. “But only these men know the truth”.
Powerful, dark, and gritty, Black Mass is an engrossing crime drama that focuses not just on the violence but on the relationships between Bulger and his crew. But Depp, whose recent string of box-office disappointments has been much chronicled, is merely bemused. “I think people should just let it rest and let it go”. Depp says. “Am I going to go in and play Tonto as the Native American with no humor or pride or war paint?” My biggest question was why was Benedict Cumberbatch in this film?
Early in the film, Bulger also wins the lottery, which really did happen … sort of.
Weeks, who is played by Breaking Bad’s Jesse Plemons in the movie, complained that he was made to look like a “knuckle-dragging moron”, while the only resemblance between Whitey and Depp’s portrayal “was the hairline”.
