Serena Williams is making her long-awaited return to major tennis this morning. She watches every single tennis match she possibly can, scheduling her limited vacation times around tournaments just to be able to watch every match.
“I had a lot of problems with [blood clots]-I don’t know how many I have had in the past 12 months”, she said.
The first glimpse of Williams as she prepared for her comeback came in an exhibition in December against 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.
She will struggle to win the French Open on this evidence, but the medium term goal will be to mount a serious challenge at Wimbledon, and that may well be within range.
Williams owns 23 Grand Slam singles titles. But Williams seems to be eyeing the chance to break the world record of 24 Grand Slam wins now held by the Australian tennis star, Margaret Court.
There’s a practical reason for the full-length legs on the skintight outfit: The aim is to protect her because of past bouts with blood clots.
Williams also opened up on balancing her new role as a mother with that of the sporting star the world has watched for nearly two decades.
The last time the American had appeared in a Grand Slam tournament was at the Australian Open in 2017, when she won it while pregnant with daughter Alexis Olympia.
“I really suffered today but it was a good test”, said Nadal who had been in danger of dropping his first set at Roland Garros since his 2015 quarter-final loss to Novak Djokovic.
“You don’t have to put her back at number one because she left at number one but try to figure out some sort of happy medium where it’s fair for all”.
Williams next will face Australian Ashleigh Barty, who is the 17th seed.
But the legendary player will have one eye on a fourth French Open title, which also rely on her body holding up under the pressure of two weeks of tennis for the first time since her return. “After everything I went through to, to be able to come back and just step on court-winning is even more of a bonus”.
As French organisers rigidly use WTA rankings to determine their seedings she is the most unsafe of floaters.
“I couldn’t play previous year”.
Williams also said the outfit helped her cope with the issue of blood clots, which she revealed, in February, nearly cost her life.
‘As for the cat suit, the new version, 2.0, it’s cool, ‘ she smiled.
“I feel like everything else will fall into place”.
“In the beginning, it was hard to learn [Olympia’s] nap schedules, even though she’s never on schedule, but at least I know that for certain parts of the day I’m spending all that time with her, because I don’t want her to ever feel like I’m not around”, Williams said.
