$1.5 billion Powerball jackpot ticket sold in California
Lottery officials had said 85.8 percent of possible number combinations had been selected by midday Wednesday in what some had been saying was the biggest lottery jackpot in the world. No more will be forthcoming.
The numbers drawn Wednesday night are 4-8-19-27-34 and Powerball 10.
The California victor was purchased at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, Calif. Details on where the winning tickets were purchased in Florida and Tennessee had not been released early Thursday morning. Dozens of TV news crews and members of the public crowded the store. They can take the winnings in annual payments spread over decades or a smaller amount in a lump sum. The Associated Press is reporting that winning tickets were also sold in Tennessee and Florida. Five tickets, each worth $1 million, were sold in MI.
A spokesman for the California Lottery said winning Powerball tickets were sold in three states: California, Florida and Tennessee. It could take several hours before officials know whether any other winning tickets were sold elsewhere.
Shortly after the drawing, California Lottery officials were the first to confirm they sold a winning jackpot ticket.
Other $1 million tickets were sold in Houston and Olmos Park, a San Antonio suburb.
The game is played in 44 states as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C.
Officials say there are some big winners around the Tri-State too. The BBC reports that this will work out as 39.6% federal income tax and whatever additional tax the winners’ home states impose.
The odds of winning the jackpot were one in more than 292 million. There were 934 players that matched four of the main numbers and the Powerball, 107 had the Power Play option and won $10,000 each and the rest won $50,000 each.
