1 dead, 1 at-large after Sunnyvale officer-involved shooting
Sunnyvale police are responding to an officer involved shooting that happened Saturday at approximately 5:30 p.m on the 700 block of San Aleso at the Motel 6.
Two male suspects fled from the vehicle when officers arrived, but a third male suspect stayed inside the auto and was cooperative with officers, public safety officials said. “The officer fired nine rounds at the suspect”, he said.
According to police, officers responded to the motel at 806 W. Ahwanee on a report of suspicious activity possibly involving a minor.
A helicopter was brought in to help in the search, according to police. Police also did not released the name of man the officer fatally shot.
Officers described him as a thin black man, about 20 years old, wearing blue jeans and a red or orange shirt, Ahearn said. One of the men was shot, and one fled from police, he said. He was pronounced dead at the scene with two guns near him, one on his body and another in his backpack, Ahearn said. Sunnyvale DPS says they believe the second suspect who took off running is Shawn Lomont Brown, who has an outstanding warrant from Fresno County for his arrest in connection with a July homicide.
“We saw the police with guns drawn, and the police were putting in their armor and heading to the building behind us”, she said. “The officer and the suspect were facing each other at the time of the shooting and in very close proximity to one another”.
A woman dining at a nearby restaurant said she witnessed the events. “I just heard some gunshots and I looked out and then I saw a lot of police out there”, she said. “Once they had him cuffed, he was talking to the officers”. “Again, that will be part of our investigation”, Ahearn said. As more information becomes available, police will make it public, he said.
In August 2013, a Sunnyvale SWAT team killed Michael Nehez, 68, after he wielded a knife and charged at officers.
Police said Weber had taken a pack of cigarettes at knifepoint from a clerk at Grewalz Liquor & Groceries at 1125 Tasman Drive. A short time later police received a 911 call regarding an armed suspect who had run through a home on Ferndale Avenue. The officer stepped out of the vehicle and followed the suspect, who he saw holding a handgun, and repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon, Hunter said. The caller told police at least one man was inside the Jaguar.
The Department of Public Safety has refused to release cellphone videos of that incident.
Anyone with information, including anything suspicious they may have witnesses, is urged to call the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety at 408-730-7110.
