1 dead, 16 injured in crash involving Charlotte transit bus
One person was killed and 15 others were injured Monday in a vehicle crash involving a Charlotte Area Transit (CATS) bus in uptown Charlotte.
CMPD will decide whether or not to release that and CATS says because this was a major accident, the bus driver won’t be back on the road until the investigation is over. The bus driver unsuccessfully swerved to avoid Adkins, police say.
The investigation lasted through rush hour, with police closing off parts of Third Street and nearby ramps to Interstate 277 during Monday’s rush hour. Investigators said he turned into the path of the bus. The front of CATS bus #2115 struck the driver’s side of the Ford, killing the driver of the truck.
Medic reported that fifteen other people were injured in the wreck.
Per standard procedure after an accident, the driver of CATS bus will undergo a drug/alcohol screening, CATS officials told Channel 9. Traffic ahead of the truck was stopped for a red light when the truck veered around the stopped traffic and entered Third Street, where it collided with the bus, which had a green light.
The victims were taken to Carolinas Medical Center and Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center for treatment.
Police believe the pickup may have experienced a brake system failure before the collision.
Crews closed the intersection, as well as the ramp from the outer loop of I-277 onto 3rd street, while they worked the scene.
