1 dead, 3 wounded at Northern Arizona University
There are no words to express the full gravity of the condolences we have for the victims of this awful tragedy. Jones was removed from the chapter’s pledge program immediately after his arrest, he said.
Arizona law prohibits guns from being carried on campus, but they are permitted inside of a locked vehicle. Barker says Jones gave “self-serving statements to police”.
It’s still unclear what propelled Jones to open fire at the early Friday morning fraternity party. The next appearance in the case is set for October. 15. A brief panic broke out in Kentucky hours later when there were reports of shots fired on a college campus.
He said Brough was “a good guy”.
Brough was at NAU working towards a business degree. He ran to his auto where his gun was being kept and opened fire. Two of the victims had stopped following but turned around when Jones said he had a gun, court documents said.
Witnesses told police the victims were about 10 feet away.
Jones will be charged with first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault.
Brough was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity and a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. He also told that the suspect is co-operating with the law-enforcement agencies.
“He was the happiest person that you probably would ever meet”, Jernegan said. The student killed in the shooting is Colin Brough.
The alleged gunman was not a member of the fraternity.
“The shooter is in custody and the campus is not on lockdown, she said”.
University president Rita Hartung Cheng said she was “shocked and deeply saddened”. That initial message was inadvertently sent to only certain groups instead of the entire list. As a mother, I already worry about sending my child off to college and now, given the appalling state of gun violence in this country, I also worry about potential campus shootings.
Emergency medical personnel were on the scene a 1:33 a.m. He also said he tried to administer first aid to one of the victims. But he criticized what he said was a culture among students who believe they shouldn’t snitch on each other.
The three others who were injured in the shooting were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for their injuries.
The demonstrators blamed the massacre here last week on two things: a failure to treat mental health problems and the designation of Umpqua Community College as a gun-free zone.
His name and age haven’t been released, however.
Brough died after being shot once in the chest and once in the shoulder.
Authorities identified the suspect as Steven Jones, a freshman at NAU, who pulled a handgun in a confrontation with students, Reuters reported.
“All Arizonans have the #Flagstaff community in their hearts today”, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said on Twitter.
Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick lives in Flagstaff. “It’s insane”, she said.
A shooting in a pupil complex left one man dead later that morning. The shooter is in custody.
Northern Arizona University, with a student body of about 20,000, is located in the mountain city of Flagstaff, about 140 miles north of Phoenix, and about 80 miles south of the Grand Canyon. “Four of our students were shot”, said NAU police chief Gregory Fowler.
It is not yet cleared what sparked the shooting near Mountain View Hall, a dormitory which houses most of the campus’ students involved in Greek organizations.
Police say the shooting erupted in a confrontation between two student groups.
