1 injured in exchange of fire between police and suspects
A gunman opened fire at police in Brooklyn on Wednesday night, hitting an unmarked police vehicle but missing the officers, police sources said.
The unmarked vehicle was hit numerous times, but the shots missed the two officers and lieutenant inside, police said.
Fort Greene residents living nearby reported hearing and seeing police officers rushing by helicopter and auto to the area via Carlton Avenue and adjacent streets for over an hour after the incident. It was not immediately clear if he had been injured by one of the officers’ bullets.
The NYPD said one suspect, identified only as a 23-year-old man, was arrested at Beth Israel Hospital, where he had gone for treatment of a gunshot wound to the left leg. Smith is in stable condition, and charges are pending.
Police said the other two suspects, a 24 year-old man and a 21 year-old man, were apprehended Thursday morning in Brooklyn.
A 24-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were taken into custody “without incident”, police say. Overall, shooting incidents across NYC are down 1.1% from previous year, but are up by 5% from 2013 [PDF], according to the department’s data.
