1 killed, 1 hurt in small plane crash on Long Island railway
Police say one person is dead and another injured after a small plane crashed Sunday morning onto railroad tracks on Long Island.
The plane burst into flames on the tracks at South Oyster Bay Road shortly after the crash.
The single-engine plane was left in two crumpled parts, 1010 WINS’ Derricke Dennis reported.
One person was killed in the crash, officials said. Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the cause… Details were not released about the deceased victim.
Nassau County Police were the first agency on scene, but the MTA Police have since taken over the investigation.
The plane, which was en route to New Jersey, was attempting to make an emergency landing at Republic Airport in Farmingdale for unknown reasons, Metropolitan Transportation Authority LIRR spokesman Salvatore Arena said on Sunday morning. Train service is suspended in both directions, he said. The pilot had called into Farmingdale reporting altitude difficulties before the crash, officials said.
Christina Rotella, a switchboard operator at the Sleepy’s headquarters at 1000 South Oyster Bay Rd. said she saw the wreckage as she arrived to work. The wing was on one side, the body of the plane on the other – and both were on the tracks.
