1 man killed, 2 injured in shooting on Venice Beach
A Venice man is under arrest following a double shooting out-front of a beachside hotel early Sunday morning.
The suspect, who was described as a Hispanic male who stands about 5-foot-8-inches, was last seen driving southbound on Speedway in a black SUV.
Police records show the owner of the hotel, who has the same name as the suspect, was taken into custody on Sunday. The suspect was arrested “for his involvement in the murder”, the spokesman said.
A judge set bail at $1 million for Sinnathamby, who owns the Cadillac Hotel on Dudley Avenue.
In Venice Beach on Tuesday, Kiva Blount, 34, said that she was present for the shooting and watched the young homeless man die. The victim of the shooting is Jascent-Jamal Lee Warren, 26.
Authorities have not released information about what caused the fight, though witnesses told police that the shooting stemmed from people telling homeless people to not sleep in front of the Cadillac Hotel, and resulted in a man shooting at the transients outside.
Witnesses also alleged that the shooter was operating under orders from the hotel owner. “It’s ruthless, it’s not necessary”, witness Ras Whitelion said.
Police said an altercation broke out on the boardwalk before shots were fired. Barry Montgomery told reporters “it appears now, at this time, that this incident was triggered by some sort of dispute among locals, which triggered this deadly attack”.
Mariah Magomedova, 29, said Warren was the first person to offer her help when she arrived at Venice Beach this May, newly homeless, from Tennessee.
