About 10 injuries were reported after a construction accident Friday night on the 91 Freeway in Corona, officials said. Those beams hit workers and caused injury, according to a news release from the RCTC. The bridge landed on its support beams, which then struck workers on the ground.
The workers were lowering the on-ramp into place about 11 p.m., the news release said. The conditions of the other five workers has not been provided. All victims, affiliated with the prime contractor Atkinson Walsh Construction Joint Venture, were transported to the nearest hospital.
Construction work on the bridge was halted Saturday morning.
An investigation into the incident was being handle by the California Occupation Safety and Health Administration.
The underpass construction was part of the State Route 91 Corridor Improvement project, which involves the widening of the freeway through Corona, Donohue said.
The 91 roadway remained open Saturday, but East Grand Boulevard was closed.
The new lanes were expected to open in 2017.
