10-man Southampton beats West Ham 1-0 in EPL
“It’s a red card”.
“It’s not his first red card, it’s his third, and that’s not good. You have to learn from your mistakes so I will speak to him about it”.
Defender Yoshida was brought in as one of three changes made by Saints boss Ronald Koeman from the team that had earned an impressive 0-0 draw at Arsenal in midweek, and the Japanese made nearly an instant impact when he swept home the opener early on.
But nine minutes after the break Payet skipped away from Wanyama and was crudely brought down by Saints’ midfield enforcer.
Wanyama has now been sent off three times this season, including for a similar incident during Southampton’s 1-0 defeat at Norwich last month.
Bilic said he was not gutted by the result but the manner of it, finding it hard to hide his frustrations.
Koeman immediately took off Mane to strengthen midfield with Oriol Romeu, and for the second time in the week Hammers found themselves playing part of a game against 10 men. “But for me as soon as the second leg comes round – scissors – it is unacceptable”.
The visitors could not find a leveller, however, as Southampton made it five consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League with their fourth win in five matches, which has moved them into seventh position in the table, just one spot behind West Ham.
The closest West Ham came to equalising was a powerful header from Winston Reid, which Forster dived to his left to palm out. “He’s a fantastic goalkeeper”, Koeman added.
Former Nigerian global, Emmanuel Emenike, failed to hit the back of the net on debut for West Ham United as they fell by a lone goal to Southampton at Saint Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.
After Shane Long had shot over for Southampton, on-loan Fenerbahce striker Emenike threatened an equaliser for West Ham when he headed wide from Valencia’s inviting cross.
“Against 10 men we dominated but we didn’t create enough and didn’t test their keeper well enough”, said Bilic.
