108-year-old woman throws out first pitch at Mariners game
In today’s cute news, let’s give it up for Evelyn Jones, who celebrated her 108th anniversary of being alive by throwing out the first pitch at a Seattle Mariners game. But that’s only because Evelyn Jones was already 70 years old when the team was established.
Jones, who turned 108-years-old on Saturday, is a great fan of the Seattle Mariners and was at Safeco Field for Saturday’s game between the Angels and Mariners. Though she is a devoted Mariners fan now, the team did not exist until Jones was 69 years old.
Evelyn was born on July 11, 1907 in the small central Washington town of Leahy. She graduated from high school in nearby Brewster in 1925 and attended one year of college at Cheney Normal School, now known as Eastern Washington University. Now Evelyn tunes into every ball game dressed in her Mariners gear, but away from the distraction of her retirement home neighbors. When it came time for the ceremonial throw, she was escorted onto the field with her daughter and two of her grandchildren.
Jones credits her long life to eating lots of beef and vegetables, regular exercise, and drinking alcohol only on Saturdays. And the 108-year-old clearly has good genes: her mother lived to 89 and her father lived to 95, according to the Mariners.
