17-year-old cancer patient tosses game coin for Irish
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (8-1) and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (3-6) meet for the third-ever time this Saturday in South Bend. Notre Dame only ran 49 offensive plays, below its season average of 70.3 per game, per TeamRankings.com.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – On a day when the University of Notre Dame honored the seniors on its football team, the Fighting Irish took another step toward authoring what may become a season that brings many more memorable moments. Why Notre Dame Will Win Superior talent at every unit of the depth chart.
“To win these games, everybody needs to have a good game”, said Muuss. Wake Forest dropped to 3-7 with the loss.
“One for the highlight reel”, Kelly said. It’s also tied for the longest run by a freshman in Football Bowl Subdivision history.
“We like to play the ball back and forth between our centerbacks, and we were a little too predictable tonight”, said Deacon goalkeeper Alec Ferrell. If Notre Dame can establish the tight end as a weapon down the stretch it will make what is already an explosive offense even tougher to defend. “It’s insane that if we would have went the other way how things would have been much different”.
“Any team that can knock off UNC in penalty kicks and then go to Clemson and win, it shows they’re scared of no one”.
Notre Dame: The Irish enjoyed a 53-31 rebounding advantage, including 31-17 in the second half.
The Irish made do without star tailback C.J. Prosise, who warmed up but didn’t dress, giving the head and neck injuries he suffered the previous week at Pitt more time to heal.
It was the second touchdown run of at least 90 yards this season for Notre Dame. “I was very pleased for our team to come into the home of the number one team in the country, in front of 5,000 people, and handle big periods of the game”.
Notre Dame pulled ahead 28-7 on a 5-yard run by Kizer with 10:58 remaining in the fourth quarter.
With the Irish leading 14-0 in the second quarter, Adams found the outside and scampered those 98 yards to tie the Football Bowl Subdivision record for longest run by a freshman, previously held by Tulane’s Jerald Sowell (1993) and Middle Tennessee State’s Jordan Parker (2012).
Demon Deacons quarterback John Wolford passed for 219 yards and rushed for a touchdown. Brian Kelly said that he would be a game time decision.
Wake Forest started the game trading chances with the Fighting Irish, with neither team establishing a true rhythm early on.
The victory gives the senior class a fitting sendoff. Also, this play came 2 plays after the Irish got the 4th-down stop at the 1, putting ND ahead 21-0 and allowing Irish fans to rest easy, if bored, the rest of the game. The Irish have covered in six of their last seven games, with their lone failed cover coming as an 11-point road favorite at Temple two weeks ago.
