18 attorneys general sue Trump administration over family separations
But the president seemed to throw a wrench into those efforts when he tweeted on June 22 that House Republicans should not even try to pass a bill before November because “Dems are just playing games” and “have no intention of doing anything to [solve] this decades-old problem”.
The moderates, however, have not been able to force votes on bipartisan bills that would have passed with mostly Democratic votes.
Before Wednesday’s tweet, many Republicans had complained that Trump had not been emphatic enough in his support for the bill.
“Immigration reform is a very complicated, difficult, and emotional issue”, he said in a statement on June 27.
With the bill’s rejection, House members will now turn their attention to a much more narrow proposal to write a law that would keep undocumented parents and children together when they’re apprehended crossing the United States border.
Republican leaders supported passage.
Last week, the House voted down a bill that would have cut legal immigration, cracked down on sanctuary cities and employers who hire undocumented workers, and increased border security. “They’ve failed to give the president the money he needs to do that, and there has to be accountability”, he said. It’s unclear yet what else that measure will include to address the family separation issue and whether it will address other issues such as asylum and immigration judges. “This is about [the president] getting $25 billion for a wall and another $7 billion to hold families in detention”, said Rep. Adriano Espaillat, New York Democrat. That aide said since conservative members knew the compromise bill being voted on Wednesday was likely not to pass as well, many seized the opportunity to cast a vote that they could later tout as evidence of their toughness on immigration by rejecting the compromise legislation.
“I have long advocated for securing our nation’s borders and providing a permanent legal fix for DACA recipients, but this proposal does not accomplish either goal”, he said last week.
The federal government is obligated to release any child from custody after about 20 days even if the child is in custody with their parents.

Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the second-ranking House Democrat, said the next proposal must be focused exclusively on keeping families together to get any support from the minority party.
Trump had urged Republicans to support the plan in a “tweet”, arguing that doing so would “show that we want strong borders & security while the Dems want open borders = crime”.
House Speaker Paul Ryan said the broader bill would also resolve the issue of young adults known as “Dreamers”, who were brought to the United States illegally as children, focus on a merit-based immigration system and secure U.S. borders and the rule of law.
A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment on whether the administration would appeal, and Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that “we’re going to see” whether it would fight the court order. This bill eliminates most family reunification.
