18 million watch GOP debate — Nielsen
Or at least that was one of the questions in the CNN Republican debate Tuesday night at The Venetian hotel-casino. Fox News still has the record number of debate viewers with its August 6 debate earlier this year.
In the last debate, Christie was relegated to the undercard. He set the tone in his opening remarks.
“America has been betrayed. I will do everything in my power to beat Hillary Clinton”. He replied that no one was better off living under dictators, but that America needed to see to its own interests first before trying to arrange more amenable foreign partners, which sounds a lot like the Trump position.
Christie continued to emphasize his experience as a governor and federal prosecutor, this time slamming several senators on the stage. He sent the president a letter in November informing him of the decision.
“I’m reminded of what FDR’s grandfather said…” There was … an argument about immigration between three first-term senators, and we’ve been talking about immigration for 25 years. “He would not be the commander-in-chief we need to keep our country safe”. “That’s reality. And we have to stop worrying about offending some people, and start defending all Americans”.
Christie said he’s been the “most tested” and “most ready” candidate when it comes to protecting the United States from terrorism. His answer was not vague by any stretch of the imagination.
On Christie: “I thought Chris Christie acquitted himself well”. That’s what it means. “Maybe because I’m from New Jersey I have this kind of plain language hang-up”. In addition, ex HP CEO Carly Fiorina says that she has “been tested” in every facet of her life and that the country needs “a tested leader willing to fight for the character of our nation”.
I again had the seat that was both the best and worst in the world. They’re not coming into this country, and if I’m president and if Obama has brought some to this country, they are leaving.
In a presidential race reshaped by national security concerns, Sens. Christie couldn’t pass up the chance to take a shot at them. But Trump said he didn’t want the mogul’s money. If your eyes are glazing over like mine, this is what it’s like to be on the floor of the United States Senate.
Progressive groups, activists and labor groups came together to watch the debate at the SEIU Local 1107 office.
“Politicians talk”, she said. “The two are inextricably connected”. The key for Christie is how he responds. He was asked directly about that and he said it has already happened.
“So rather than the complex work of proposing hard policy solutions, what you can do is riff in an emotional way – that also makes for great soundbites the morning after the debate – about how much trouble Barack Obama has gotten us into, and how much jeopardy he’s put us into, and then cast yourself as the savior”. And he says there’s “too much yelling” in politics to solve those problems. Christie’s closing statement was a riff on 9/11. There were no acknowledgements that acts of terrorism are exceptionally rare, with just “45 Americans killed in jihadist terrorist attacks” since 9/11.
The debate revealed the party’s internal debate over national security, divided between the desire to lash out at the Islamic State and concerns over civil liberties that arose in the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks.
KASICH: “No. I don’t think it is [a good idea]”.
Tuesday night’s Republican debate drew 18 million total viewers on CNN, according to Nielsen, becoming the second-most-watched program in network history.
After that, it’s off to the races, with New Hampshire hosting the nation’s first primary on February 9.
