1st all-female Honor Flight takes older veterans to Washington from Cincinnati
The veterans toured the World War II, Vietnam, Korean, Air Force, Marine, Women’s, and Lincoln Memorials.
The Pope isn’t the only significant visitor to D.C. today.
WCPO-TV (http://bit.ly/1V7ahcR ) reports more than 140 people were on the roster for Tuesday’s Honor Flight daytrip to Washington from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky worldwide Airport.
Hundreds of veterans and their loved ones traveled to Northern Kentucky this morning for the first ever Women’s Honor Flight in the nation. It also features a special visit to the Women in Combat Memorial at Arlington, along with other Washington D.C. sights.
They left from CVG at 7:00 a.m. following a ceremonial sendoff and all wearing pink shirts.
If the flight is a success, Popp said it could be replicated at other Honor Flight hubs across the city. Each veteran will be accompanied by a veteran guardian, 10 percent of the guardians are family and 9 percent of the guardians are volunteers who paid their own way or were sponsored by a corporation or individual.
“Each flight is special because we are able to give back to those who served and sacrificed for us, and this one is no different, but it does have the added layer of focusing on our women veterans, too often an afterthought when we think of our military over the years”.
Barhorst said she heard of Honor Flight in the past, but was reluctant to go with the men because they served overseas and most saw some action.
