1st human case of West Nile reported in Arizona this year | WBNS-10TV
It is for the first time that the disease has been detected in the state. However, some of those species can be found in Sheridan County. There were 44 human cases that resulted in four deaths. (166 cases and 14 fatalities were reported across the state.). This season South Dakota reported its first human WNV case on June 30, a Brown County resident in the 50 to 59 age group diagnosed with WNV fever.
But like influenza, West Nile virus is unpredictable.
“It’s important for people to take steps to reduce their risk of becoming infected with West Nile virus“, explains Councilwoman Colleen Morrone, with the Councils liaison to the Department of Intercommunity Health.
Hopefully, using inactivated virus cells incapable of infecting a host, the vaccine will be able to trigger that response and keep the subjects free from West Nile. This group, which is disproportionately comprised of the elderly, develops serious neurologic problems like paralysis and meningitis.
The symptoms typically last a few days. Some of the neurologic effects may be permanent.
To date, no mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile or Eastern Equine Encephalitis this year in Rhode Island. Of those, almost 40,000 that held standing water have been treated with larvicide, and this work is almost completed. Also, health officials advise people to clean their swimming pools and chlorinate them if they are not using them. Get rid of anything outside holding water where mosquitoes lay their eggs, such as old tires.
The ADHS also warns citizens that they’re susceptible to other mosquito-spread diseases when they leave the state: dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and malaria.
Right now, New Mexico is one of only a handful of states, including Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, reporting human cases of the virus, and it has a lot to do with all the recent rains we’ve had. If you or anyone close to you has the symptoms previously mentioned it is best to contact you medical care provider as soon as possible.
Residents living in the Chicago suburbs where the mosquitoes have been identified as being infected with the West Nile virus expressed their concern regarding this issue.
