2 airlifted to hospital after house explodes in Waxahachie
Authorities said several people were injured when a house exploded in North Texas Monday morning. The boy also reportedly suffered burns, but was able to walk out of the home.
The home explosion left just a small portion of the structure’s frame intact, with most of the home falling onto the foundation and collapsing.
The American Red Cross said that in addition to the destroyed home and two with major damage, 10 others with minor damage were also evacuated.
Preliminary reports indicate the Waxahachie home exploded due to a natural gas leak. It leveled the home and damaged at least nine adjacent houses. However, Atmos Energy issued statements Monday stating that its crews were dispatched to the scene to perform leak surveys and determine if gas was involved.
“We heard a boom”, one neighbor said. “At this point it is too soon to tell what caused this incident”, said Jennifer Altieri of Atmos Energy.
Residents in the area said the explosion shook their homes and sounded like a bomb.
Candace Ahlfinger, spokeswoman for the Waxahachie Independent School District, confirmed to NBC 5 that no students or teachers lived in the home and that everyone at the nearest school, Clift Elementary School, was safe. “We went out to look and things were flying around”. “Everyone is fine. No evacuations”.
Atmos Energy Corporation and the Waxahachie Fire Department could not be immediately reached for comment by BuzzFeed News. “It was very strong”.
The Red Cross and Salvation Army were on the scene assisting residents.
