2 horses euthanized after accidents at Calgary rodeo
Animal rights groups have long called for an end to the horse races. However, the chuckwagon races are often a dark spot in the celebration because the event has marred by the deaths of many participating horses (over 50 since 1986, according to Global News).
“Although driver error is rare, we know that the Stampede, the two professional associations and the drivers themselves are working together to ensure these incidents are not repeated”, said Stan Church, chairman of the safety commission.
In the second incident the Safety Commission said that both the driver of the horse that died as well as the other driver were at fault. Driver error was deemed to be the cause of that crash as well.
“This is considered a serious injury; and unfortunately our veterinarian needed to euthanise the horse immediately”, Kurt Kadatz, spokesman for Calgary Stampede, told Canadian press.
Nolin has been fined $5,000. Carey’s team. It is the first time the chuckwagon safety committee, formed in 2008, has ruled two drivers at once have been responsible for a crash.
On Saturday, one of chuckwagon driver Layne Bremner’s horses was euthanized after a collision with another wagon. Bremner, who was driving, received a “no-time” sanction, a $C2500 penalty, and a five-second penalty for interference.
The VHS is calling on the Stampede to establish an independent panel of equine experts to determine if anything can be done to make the race safer. Horses are now given mandatory rest days during the competition.
