2 killed in New Hampshire tent collapse
At least a dozen people were taken to four area hospitals but Degnan said the extent of their injuries wasn’t clear because some went in private cars.
Heidi Medeiros, who was at the circus with her three-year-old son, said it suddenly went dark and she heard someone screaming, ‘Get out, get out.’.
Officials are continuing to investigate the incident. Calls and emails to Walker global Events were not returned Tuesday.
“We all this morning have heavy hearts”, Gov. Maggie Hassan told WMUR-TV early Tuesday. “There were many reports of trees and power lines down with estimated wind gusts of 60 miles per hour or greater”.
“There is a place of assembly permit required and we are tracking that down at this time”.
“That is something that we’re looking into”, Degnan said of the permit.
The state is inspecting the setup of the tent and assessing its compliance with fire codes, he said, and information is “trickling in”. He described them as a “young gentleman” and a “young girl”, but declined to give their ages, saying their families were still being notified. The National Weather Service is assisting with the investigation.
The Walker Brothers Circus tent’s metal infrastructure collapsed when the big top tent collapsed as a microburst moved through Lancaster.
“Their responsibility is for the safety of their guests”, Degnan said.
“The injured were taken to the regional hospitals and are undergoing treatment”. More people might have been hurt and sought medical help on their own, he added. “As the father of two daughters I can’t imagine the pain and grief that this tragedy has caused the family, friends, and loved ones of these two Vermonters”.
Walker worldwide Events said on its website it had canceled a performance Tuesday night in Bradford, Vermont.
Due to the unpredictable weather conditions, the famous Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago’s Grant Park was briefly shut down on Sunday afternoon.
About 32 people among the 100 guests had to be hospitalized, fire officials said.
