2 more out of hospital from California shootings
In this courtroom sketch, Enrique Marquez, left, appears in federal court opposite Judge Sheri Pym, …
Around 2011, Farook and Marquez “began planning to commit terrorist acts in the Southern California area”, the document says, specifically a community college and a freeway. Marquez attended Riverside from the fall of 2009 to the winter term of 2011, while Farook was registered as a student there from 2004 to 2010, according to the Los Angeles Times. Prosecutors don’t have to show any affiliation with a terrorist group.
Marquez responds, “the only reason why we’re anxious is because we haven’t hung out that much”. “He did the San Bernardino shooting”.
Farook was born in Chicago in 1987 to Pakistani parents and has been described as a seemingly happy, quiet and deeply religious man, one who displayed no warning signs to co-workers or neighbors.
“Marquez admitted that the attacks were created to maximize the number of casualties that could be inflicted”, the affidavit said. Marquez told authorities he converted to Islam around age 16 and four years later was spending most of his time at Farook’s home, reading, listening to and watching “radical Islamic content” that included al-Qaida instructions on how to make bomb.
According to the criminal complaint, Marquez met Farook around 2004 when he moved to Riverside. He said he agreed to buy them because “Farook looked Middle Eastern”.
Awlaki is credited with the creation of Al Qaeda’s Inspire magazine, which was read by Boston Marathon bombers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Marquez would shoot from a nearby hillside, targeting police, as Farook fired at drivers from the road. These men were later convicted and sentenced to prison.
So is Farook’s wife, Tashfeen Malik.
Authorities previously said Marquez had legally purchased the guns Farook and Malik used. Tonight San Bernadino was preparing for a visit from President Barack Obama.
They grew apart but remained in contact and in November 2014 Marquez entered into a sham marriage with the Russian woman, for which he was paid $200 a month, authorities say. They planned to attack the college cafeteria with pipe bombs, then fire on students as they attempted to flee the explosions.
Alternatively, there was the rush-hour highway plan, which was to begin with a series of pipe bomb explosions to bring traffic to a standstill.
Marquez was arrested Thursday on weapons charges related to a December 2 mass shooting at a San Bernardino social services center which killed 14 people and injured 17. Marquez is also accused of plotting attacks with Farook in 2011 and 2012 that they never carried out.
The full affidavit paints a clear picture of Farook and Marquez as jihadi enthusiasts.
The court documents were submitted after the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested a friend of the couple who allegedly bought the machine guns used in the massacre.
Marquez waived his right to have an attorney present each day he was interviewed, the affidavit states.
In that case, two defendants received 25-year sentences while two who cooperated with the government received sentences of 10 years and 5 years, court records show.
