2 people shot, killed by Chicago officer

Relatives of Bettie Jones said they, too, have “so many questions and no answers”.

“The 55 year old female victim was accidentally struck and tragically killed”, police said.

The Chicago Police Chief of Detectives released a statement saying that the officers were “confronted by a combative individual”.

The latest shooting happened early on Saturday on the city’s west side, creating a new cop crisis for the city’s first Jewish mayor. It has also been corrected to show that the last name of the 19-year-old is Legrier instead of Legreir.

“My son has seven bullet wounds in him”, Cooksey told WLS-TV. She specifically asked for Emanuel to deliver a personal apology for the loss of her son, not to deliver the message on the news or in a press conference, but rather in person. Relatives said LeGrier’s father made the call to Chicago police due to his son appearing to be quite frustrated and agitated.

It is unclear whether police knew that LeGrier was suffering with mental illness, or if officers attempted to use a Taser before opening fire. Did it warrant him getting shot and killed? He said she “had an excellent Christmas”.

Jones lived in the first-floor apartment with her boyfriend, he said. One woman told us that one of the victims was her 56-year-old mother. They include 19-year-old twins. He says there is “a whole lot of anger, a whole lot of tears”.

“His father was scared because that’s not his character”, said LeGrier’s mother, Janet Cooksey, 49, who was not present at the time of the shooting.

He had graduated a year ago from Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy with a grade-point average above 3.0 and was listed as part of a team of students who ran the 2013 Chicago Marathon to raise money for clean drinking water for African children.

LeGrier’s father told the Chicago Sun-Times he had invited his son to a family holiday gathering before the shooting but the younger man chose not to go. She says sometimes he would “get loud, but not violent”. Jones was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A Chicago woman whose son was shot to death on Christmas Day 2014 has sued the city of Chicago and the police officers involved.

The police said that around 4:25 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to a “domestic disturbance” on West Erie Street and were “confronted by a combative subject”.

The Independent Police Review Authority is now investigating.

Homicides overall, not just officer-involved shootings, have been a major issue in Chicago, dealing with more homicides the past few years than even NY and Los Angeles, two more populous cities.

The shooting comes as tension between Chicago Police and its community are running high following the release of video showing the killing of black teen-ager Laquan McDonald, which seemed to contradict the official police account of the killing.
