2 small planes collide over ocean near LA
The search for survivors is ongoing after two planes collided over the ocean near Los Angeles Harbor on Friday afternoon.
“They found both a partial tail number and then a second tail number”, Los Angeles County lifeguard Capt. Ken Haskett said.
Two small planes have collided and crashed into the ocean off of Los Angeles harbour and there’s no word on survivors.
Divers enter the water off the L.A. harbor in the search for a possible downed plane on February 5, 2016.
The crew of a fishing boat reported a plane hitting the water, an official with the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Lifeguards Division said. Coast Guard officials said their teams would search throughout the evening on Friday.
The crash site was a quarter-mile (0.5 kilometers) south of the Angels Gate light. The area is popular for flight students.
“We are speculating to some degree that there were two aircraft, but it would be unusual for one just to go down with that amount of debris field”, Williams said.
Reports indicated water in the area is about 80 feet deep. She later confirmed that two planes were involved in the incident, but could not say if an in-flight collision had occurred.
“So with the amount of activity, actually, I think we’ve been fortunate”, he said. But the aircraft managed to return to their airports, and the four people on board escaped injury. “I don’t know why, what happened in this situation”.
