Kerber, who gave a great competition to Williams, appreciated the American player and said she deserves the victory.
Four years after their last Wimbledon title together, Serena and Venus are now 14-0 in grand slam finals.
Final defeats followed in the opening two slams of this season, to Kerber at the Australian Open and Garbine Muguruza at the French Open, and the end of Williams’ period of dominance was proclaimed. I expect to win every time I step out on the court.
Williams secured a final break in the eighth game of the second set, and then served out the victory with a forehand volley victor, fittingly the same stroke which she had flubbed against Kerber down match point in Australia. But (there are) different times on the court that we both take over. I don’t know, when I go out there I just enjoy it. Obviously I’m looking forward to getting back to Australia, it’s one of my favorite places to go.
At some point during that period, Williams sent a text message to Mouratoglou that he found full of meaning.
After 12 months of personal and injury problems, she said: “I have had some sleepless nights with a lot of stuff that was going on, but yeah, I guess this has mended a broken heart”. I didn’t come from any money or anything, but I did have a dream and I did have hope. “I think Serena was returning better there”.
“She sounded like Serena, she was thinking like Serena”. The numbers. “So I know she won a lot, so that’s basically it”.
In December 2015, Williams became the second woman in history to be named Sportsperson of the Year by Sports Illustrated.
It was just Kerber’s second grand slam final, having reached the same stage – against the same opponent – on her way to taking out the Australian Open. I love playing out here.
During the past two weeks at Wimbledon, Williams certainly did appear to be back to possessing the confident, all-powerful presence the world is accustomed to seeing and hearing – on and off the court. “The other losses were the consequences of this one, that’s what I feel”. And then its like when you taste something that tastes so good, you want it again and again and again, so it gets a little addicting.. I can do this.
Speaking from a wheelchair by his tent, and still on morphine, he said: “I told them “even if it kills me, I’m going to Wimbledon”. So at a certain point you’re going to make one or two mistakes and Serena did the job.
“The tennis player was there but Serena as a person was not really herself, so she was beatable”.
