2 windows shattered on media bus at Olympics
Damage to a media bus in the Deodoro area of Rio de Janeiro on the fourth day of the Rio Olympic Games, Brazil.. There were no injures.
A spokesman for Rio’s organizing committee, Mario Andrada, said forensic investigators are looking into the matter and trying to determine whether a bullet or a rock was responsible for breaking the bus window.
A volunteer and a journalist received minor injuries, and the local authorities are investigating alleged attack.
“The two windows did not shatter immediately but one of them shattered as we drove along the motorway”.
She also said the bus driver initially tried to stop but was told to keep moving by the dozen or so journalists on board, the first police vehicle to reach them did not appear to know what to do, there was no first-aid kit on the bus, medical assistance when they reached the press centre was minimal and police failed to interview them all. The bus driver stopped the bus about half a minute afterwards.
“He continued to drive for a few metres until he saw a police vehicle and stopped”.
“At this time, he realized that two windows on the same side of the bus were broken”, the committee said in a statement. “He resumed the route under the escort of the police vehicle and the broken windows began to give way further”.
“A few minutes later the bus pulled over on the motorway and the driver spoke to the police”.
“Even if the report concludes it was stones, that is totally unacceptable”, Andrada said.
The incident raises more concerns about security at the games. Officials said it had been fired from a hillside favela, but said the games had not been targeted.
On Saturday, a stray bullet flew through the roof of a media tent at the Olympic Equestrian Center.
Another suspect package was blown up on Tuesday near the luxury beachfront Copacabana Palace hotel.
Police said the man had robbed several people in the area, but did not give further details.
This came a day after police confirmed that a man sitting in a vehicle had killed a suspect who tried to carjack his luxury automobile.
