26 injured as Porsche in Malta motor show skids into crowd
Organized by the Office of the President in collaboration with a core team of volunteers, the Paqpaqli Ghall-Istrina is the biggest annual motoring event in Malta, mainly aiming at raising funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund.
The initial estimate was of 14 people who were injured, but the government first revised the number to 21 and later to 26. Arnold Cassola, said in a statement, “our thoughts and sympathy go to all the victims of this tragic event”. 3 of the injured are in a critical condition, while 9 suffered serious injuries. The auto was being driven by experienced driver and owner Paul Bailey. It’s not clear who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. She was among the victims taken to the nearby Mater Dei hospital for treatment.
The police, on their Facebook page, asked motorists to avoid the areas of Hal Farrug, Luqa, Qormi in view of the traffic accident.
Of the 26 injured, 19 people were treated at Mater Dei Hospital.
Fearne also said that the hospital was initially under a major incident mode, but it has now returned back to normal.
President of Malta Marie Louise Coleiro Preca was seen at the scene shortly after the incident. He said he was proud by the response of the hospital staff. He was among those injured.
Witnesses described scenes of “chaos” when “many people were hit”. However, it urged the public to visit the blood bank in the coming days.
