2nd campus shooting today: 1 fatally shot at Texas Southern University housing
It follows another fatal shooting earlier on Friday at Northern Arizona University in the city of Flagstaff, where an overnight confrontation between students escalated into gunfire that killed one person and wounded three others.
TSU campus is on lockdown as police search for a gunman responsible for at least one shooting incident nearby.
Police said a person called 911 to report that two people were shot. A third suspect fled out of an apartment window and is still at large, she said. The wounded victim is listed in stable condition at the hospital, according to KPRC.
The incident marked the third shooting on or near the campus in a week; it’s unclear whether they’re related. On Tuesday, university police said a shooting after a poetry slam on campus injured another man. TSU students tweeted in the moments after the shooting: “We went outside to go see them and one person didn’t wake up”.
The shooter was in custody, and the school was not on lockdown, university spokesman Cindy Brown told CNN.
Texas Southern University is home to 10,000 students and is located in Houston, Texas.
Fowls had a 3-year-old son, and said she wouldn’t feel safe walking with him on campus. The shootings also came on the day President Barack Obama visited Roseburg, Ore., to console the wounded and the family members of the eight students and teacher who were shot and killed at Umpqua Community College.
The incident was the second shooting on campus in just 12 hours. Counselors from the University Counseling Center will be made available to all students. “It’s insane. It’s broad daylight’ she said”. A possible suspect has already been detained in the shooting.
The alert conditions were raised, but classes were cancelled, and the apartment building where the shooting occurred remained closed. The extent of the other victim’s injuries was not immediately revealed, but officials said the student is expected to survive.
