2nd test: Nathan takes 8-50 as India collapses vs Australia
“We conceded a first innings lead of more than what we had expected”.
India coach Anil Kumble urged his team to move on from the debacle in the opening test against Australia as the hosts seek a series-levelling victory in the second match starting on Saturday. This time around Kohli again misses to fire against the visitors. “We had a chat about it and we are working on areas where we could do much better”, Vijay said on Wednesday.
“I’ve been very impressed with Nathan Lyon today”, Waugh said. He’s thinking if it bounces he might get an inside edge. I think it’s time to focus on our skills rather than what Australia is saying or preparing like. “Obviously we have to start well here this morning with the ball”.
“If you look at Rangana Herath who is one of the best spinners in the world, and what does he does so well?” He hits the same spot over and over. “There were some cracks in the pitch and I was trying to hit them”. Matthew Wade is doing good with the gloves on hard subcontinental tracks while Mitchell Marsh too, like his brother faces a stiff competition from Maxwell to get a place in the team. All the last five batsmen of the Indian batting line-up got out for single digit scores.
“And a good toss to win”, Kohli said at the toss. We have not seen Kohli play like this ever, he has not been able to judge the ball trajectory of the ball and making mistakes which he never used to. “Looks like a good track to bat on so we would like to put some big runs on the board”. The latter wasn’t fluent but he and Rahul shared a 61-run second-wicket partnership which proved to be the highest alliance in the Indian innings.
“I told him to be mentally prepared to play, even if you are included in the team at the last moment, much like all the fielders expect the ball to come their way when a bowler bowls”, he revealed about his talk with Kuldeep. “We know where we went wrong”.
“We have got to think about our own game and put it in the open in the team meetings”, Vijay added on what needs to be done. We’ve got the belief in the team, the feeling in that change room is unbelievable at the moment. “We don’t base our cricket on that stuff”.
Lack of success at the beginning of Australia’s summer also raised questions about his place in the test team. In Bengaluru, it was conventional off-spin on Nathan Lyon.
“I’d like to see a victor and a loser in this series, I don’t want it to be a draw and I am sure both the teams will play aggressive cricket and there will be results”, he added. “This is where my passion lies and I just want to keep doing what I can for Australia”.
