3 dead, multiple injuries in Bronx crash
Investigators are looking into whether a medical condition may have caused a motorist to smash into a group of trick-or-treaters in the Bronx Saturday, killing three people including a 10-year-old girl.
The 65-year-old man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has been identified as Louis Perez of Morris Park Avenue. The vehicle was left teetering on a brick wall as a child’s shoe and stroller lay on the sidewalk.
The 10-year-old trick-or-treater and her grandfather who were killed by a careening auto on Halloween in the Bronx were remembered Sunday by their devastated family. Police said the male was traveling westbound on Morris Park Avenue when it bumped the rear of a Toyota Camry, crossed the double yellow lines and continued to travel west on Morris Park Avenue when it mounted the sidewalk and struck six pedestrians.
“There was a family of kids trick-or-treating, walking behind me”, Kristina DeJesus said.
“You wish you could have done more”, Cotza said. He was completely devoted to them, she said.
“It was all because my dad wanted to take my girls for a second round of trick-or-treating”, she said. “Isn’t that insane? I had already taken the girls earlier”. The remaining victims were all treated at Jacobi for nonlife threatening injuries.
The driver was also injured in the crash. The injured included the unidentified 52-year-old driver of the auto, a 3-year-old girl, a 9-year-old girl and 21-year-old woman. “It looked like something from a war movie”.
“Last night’s crash tore apart two families”. Police were unable to say if he faced charges or arrest as the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad continues to investigate the crash. Police are examining whether a medical problem such as a seizure may have been involved.
